[sws_divider_padding] [sws_divider_line] [sws_divider_padding] [td_dropcaps Dropcap_letter="T"][/td_dropcaps]his upcoming Saturday, June 23rd 2012, in Linz, Austria, Billy's Adventures In Space, my five-moment tuba quartet piece with narrative, will receive its world premiere by the Desert Oasis Tuba Quartet. [sws_divider_padding] [td_dropcaps Dropcap_letter="S"][/td_dropcaps]ix or seven months ago, I was approached by euphoniumist extraordinaire Leanne Stamp to write an original work for her tuba quartet, the Desert Oasis Tuba Quartet. Like most composition projects in my life, I agreed, wrote a short concept down, hated it, became completely discouraged, and left it alone for a while. In the meantime, Leanne's group, consisting of herself, Brad Bradley on second euphonium, Saxon Lewis on first tuba and Garrison Gillham on the low end (isn't everyone in a tuba quartet kind of "low end"?), was invited shortly thereafter to perform at the upcoming [International Tuba Euphonium Conference] in Linz, Austria -- a very prestigious honor reserved for only a very few highly skilled ensembles internationally. I regained my motivation to write, and after receiving my standard commission fee of $1.5 million in freshly laundered bills (cash-marked burlap bags, Hamburglar-style), I spent the next months writing the work. [sws_divider_padding] [td_dropcaps Dropcap_letter="A"][/td_dropcaps]s the work started coming to life, I decided this … Read more

[sws_divider_padding] [td_dropcaps Dropcap_letter="W"][/td_dropcaps]ithout question, nearly every musician has been given this advice at one point or another: "If you want to make it in this business, you have to move to New York or Los Angeles." [sws_divider_padding] New York. Los Angeles. The only two cities in existence. Maybe Chicago. [sws_divider_padding] The allure is undeniable. Although jazz history began in New Orleans, it is New York that became the musician's mecca. The romantic dream of life in the big city. Louis Armstrong headed up north during the exodus to join the Fletcher Henderson band. The Gil Evans writing factory set up shop in a low-key apartment in the thick. Et al. In Los Angeles, the grandeur of Hollywood and the historic sound stages goad countless young music students each year into shelling out tens of thousands of dollars in tuition for a stab at the scene. Regardless of which city a musician chooses, the fundamental goal remains the same: A life of struggle with the payoff of an appreciative audience, a community of like-minded progressives, and perhaps -- a chance at a golden opportunity. [sws_divider_padding] Music is fading. It is becoming less important as an art. What exists in the mainstream … Read more

[td_dropcaps Dropcap_letter="O"][/td_dropcaps]n April 28th, 2012, our very own UNLV Sextet -- consisting of Otto Ehling on Piano, Austin Pooley on Drums, Nick Schmitt on Bass, Kevin Early on Trumpet, Nick Tulli on Sax and myself on trombone -- took 1st place at the 50th annual Reno Jazz Festival in Reno, Nevada. Since its first year in 1962, the festival has endeavored to bring to Reno both talented students and renowned professional artists. The festival has consistently attracted some of the best school bands in the nation, in part because they enjoy the festival’s competition and also because they know they will get to see great artists in concert and in workshops such as Michael and Randy Brecker, Dave Holland, Nicholas Payton, Bobby Hutcherson, Maria Schneider, Roy Haynes, Ravi Coltrane, Ingrid Jensen, Joshua Redman, Lee Konitz and many others. In addition, Kevin Early won the outstanding trumpet soloist award & yours truly was awarded with the outstanding trombone soloist award. All in all, a tremendous victory for our school and a notable personal achievement. [sws_divider_padding] The UNLV Jazz program is run by Dave Loeb (Pianist - Family Guy, American Dad, Cleveland Show, The Hollywood Bowl, et al.) and Nathan Tanouye (Trombonist/Arranger … Read more
